THE FAMILY

Producing wines since the end of the 1700s

Ambrogio and Giovanni Folonari have inherited a history dating back over two centuries, the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to be precise. Their forefather Lorenzo Folonari, born in Valtellina in 1729, moved the family to Val Camonica, an area that soon became home to a long line of entrepreneurs who made a name for themselves in Brescia’s business world, firstly through trade and then through the production of wine.
In 1882, the brothers Italo and Francesco Folonari transferred the headquarters of the business, which at the time was called Fratelli Folonari, from Val Camonica to Brescia. About ten years later, in 1911, they purchased Ruffino, a long-standing Tuscan wine company known for the distribution in Italy and abroad of Chianti Classico bottled in traditional straw-wrapped bottles known as fiaschi. In the early sixties, Nino Folonari, Italo’s son, made the decision to abandon mass production in favour of quality.
Nino was responsible for acquiring the estates in Greve in Chianti: the Tenuta del Cabreo estate purchased in 1967 and the Tenuta di Nozzole estate purchased in 1971.
In the year 2000, Ambrogio and Giovanni Folonari, respectively Nino’s son and nephew, established the company named Ambrogio e Giovanni Folonari Tenute, composed of five estates located in the areas of Tuscany best suited to wine production, where some of the best wines are produced. Following in Nino’s footsteps, Ambrogio and Giovanni continue to pursue an important project designed to promote the region and its diversity, investing in the estates and focusing on the production of high quality, elegant wines with a strong character and closely linked to the region.
Innovation, creativity, research and respect for diversity are the values on which the history of this family and its long line of generations is based.
